What the numbers say
How Many American Households Have Just One Person?
39.7 million in 2025, the Census Bureau estimates: 29% of households, up from 20% in 1975.
Living alone is not the same as being single, and a household is not a person. That count covers homes of every age, while the figures below are about people aged 65 and over.
- 26%of Americans aged 65 and over lived alone in 2023 (Pew Research)
- 31%of women aged 65 and over lived alone in 2023, against 19% of men (Pew Research)
- 61.2million Americans were 65 or older in 2024 (Census Bureau)
- 11states where people aged 65 and over outnumbered children in 2024 (Census Bureau)
Pew Research analysed Census Bureau survey data for those first two figures, and noted that the share of over-65s living alone had slipped from 29% in 1990. The Census Bureau’s 2024 estimates put people aged 65 and over at 18.0% of the population, and in eleven states they outnumbered children:
- Maine
- Vermont
- Florida
- Delaware
- Hawaii
- Montana
- New Hampshire
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- West Virginia
In those estimates Maine had the oldest median age, 44.8, and Utah the youngest, 32.4.

Sex Between 65 and 80: What One 2018 Poll Found
Here is what one 2018 poll found.
A University of Michigan and AARP poll, published in 2018, asked 1,002 Americans aged 65 to 80 about sex and sexual health. Some 40% said they were sexually active. And 62% said they would consult a doctor about a sexual health problem, yet only 17% had done so in the previous two years.
Naughty Seniors lets you choose the ages you want to see, and its daily suggestions weigh distance too. Your profile shows only the nearest town or city, never an address or live location. VIP members can also filter by city and distance, and the features page lists what each level adds.

Four American Services Worth Bookmarking
Casual dating comes with two bits of admin: getting checked when it makes sense, and reporting anyone who tries to fleece you. Here is where to do both.
CDC GetTested
The CDC’s locator for HIV, STI and viral hepatitis testing and vaccines near you. It says many clinics offer confidential testing at low or no cost, and it advises talking to your doctor.
Planned Parenthood
A non-profit provider, not a government body. It says STD testing prices depend on the tests, your income and your insurance, and that some clinics test at low or no cost by income.
FTC ReportFraud
The Federal Trade Commission’s place to report fraud, scams and bad business practices. Use it if a match asks you for money.
FBI IC3
The FBI’s IC3 calls itself, in its 2025 annual report, the central hub for reporting cyber-enabled crime. That year it logged 201,266 complaints of every kind from people aged 60 and over, up 37% on 2024.
Safer sex over 50 covers testing, dating scams over 50 lists the warning signs, and the safety page shows what the site itself does. The figures here were read from their sources on 19 October 2026.
