What ONS counted
Millions of People in the UK Have the Place to Themselves
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) does the counting.
About 8.6 million
people lived alone in the UK in 2025, ONS estimates: 29.5% of households, and 49.6% of those living alone were aged 65 or over.
3.3 million
people aged 65 and over in England and Wales lived alone at the 2021 Census, says ONS, which is 30.1% of that age group. At the 2021 Census, ONS counted 12.2% of residents of England and Wales aged 65 and over as divorced or as having a dissolved civil partnership.
22.2%
of the population of Wales was 65 or over in mid-2025, ONS estimates, against 19.1% in England. Both shares have climbed since 2011.

NHS Clinics in England Are for Everyone, Whatever Your Age
Clinics in England do not charge, according to the NHS website, and the door is open whatever your age, gender, ethnicity or sexuality. Visits stay confidential, and you can keep your real name to yourself. Age UK, the charity, adds that you can catch an STI at any age.
- In England you do not usually need a GP referral or an appointment, but the NHS suggests contacting the clinic first to check.
- The NHS points out that many infections show no symptoms, which makes testing the only sure answer.
- The NHS and Age UK both say some clinics take drop-ins and others work by appointment.
- The NHS lists a national sexual health helpline on 0300 123 7123: Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm.
The NHS clinic finder asks for a town, city or postcode in England, so it is an England-only route. Elsewhere in the UK, check your own nation’s health service. The helpline details were read on 19 October 2026. The safer sex over 50 guide covers the basics.
